CJS 528/CIS 420: The Case of Irwin Winter

Shawna Brooks is 10 years old. Her father, Mark, indicated she was upset after a recent photo shoot with Mr. Winter and had not been willing to discuss what had made her upset. It seems that Mr. Winter asked Mr. Brooks if he had any interest in his daughter modeling children's clothes and that there was a lot of money to be made in that area if she was willing to do some photos. Mr. Brooks had decided that this was a good idea for his daughter who was interested in modelling. Mr. Winter indicated his wife would provide the clothes and supervise the photo session but that Mr. Brooks should not attend as it often made the child uncomfortable if the parent was present.

On 26-Jan-2009. Mr. Brooks took his daughter to the studio and dropped her off there for the photo shoot. He was told to return in 3 hours to pick her up. When he returned his daughter acted "strange" and he asked if everything was alright. She said "Yes" but continued to act strange.

Several days later, the daughter asked her father if they could choose which pictures would be sent out because there were some she didn't want to use. Her father then became concerned and asked "Why." The daughter explained that the photos without her clothes made her feel embarrased and she didn't really want to do that kind of modeling. The father then contacted Winter and proceeded to threaten him. After several threats he went to Winter's apartment and subsequently attacked him. Mr. Brooks was arrested on 29-Jan-2009 for assault and then contacted both and attorney and his local police about the photos.

Detective Martins took statements from Brooks and his daughter. The daughter indicated that there was no wife present and Winter had asked her to remove her clothes for some "test" photos to get an idea of her body type before they proceeded with the clothes shoot. She also indicated that several of the items of clothing she wore were "underwear" and that she also didn't like those shoots.

Police proceeded to obtain a warrant for the apartment but upon arrival found that Winter was gone as were his things. A neighbor indicated that he had moved out previously and had not been around since the attack. She also indicated that she had never seen a "wife" or other female present at the apartment.

Upon search of the empty apartment, a 3.5 diskette labeled "kinderkunst" was found. This disk was secured in an anti-static bag and was labelled as NYCPD06-2014-0001 and was taken by to the HTCL for investigation. HTCL produced a DD image of the diskette and outsourced the examination of the image to you. The unit wishes to pursue investigation of Winter, but needs solid evidence to have resources allocated to the case. Examine the image and produce a report.
