For this course you will create and maintain a lab notebook. This notebook may be electronic in nature or it may be in a lab book. This is entirely up to you. In either regard, you are responsible for maintaining backups of this material as there will be a massive grade reduction if you cannot submit documentation of your work during the term.
Lab notebooks must start with the statment required from the Safety page.
Lab notebooks will be used to document your activities: In the case of each of the 14+ lab exercises, you must document the date(s) and time(s) you worked on the lab which should include an entry such as the following:
Date: 31 -- August -- 2006, 20:25
Installation of motherboard in my machine. Static Straps are in use throughout.
A bezel for this motherboard (which was included) was installed. Care should be taken not to be cut by the razor sharp edges on the case and bezel. The bezel was verified before installation and it was appropriate for the motherboard. Several openings in the bezel had to be removed. This was for the ethernet port and one video port. This was done with a hemostat (surgical clamp).
It was observed that the power supply could be installed later without removing the motherboard.
Motherboard (EPOX 8MMIK-3I) was installed into the case. Seperators were verified and 9 seperators were installed to match 9 holes in motherboard. Screws with washers were installed and secured.
A photo of the installation is seen below in Figure 1. (note photo is merely an example)
The following jumpers were verified: cmos set to pins 1-2, battery in place, jclk set to 133.
No power supply connectors or other materials were installed in this session.
Time Out: 22:50. Doug White
Note, this is a completely contrived example. Photos are nice, but not required for the course. You certainly may include diagrams, notations or drawings, or any other information that would allow an outsider to reproduce your results accurately by following your instructions. Other events such as downloads or installs should include websites, filenames, and storage locations.
Please backup both electronic copies or paper work as reproduction of them is very very difficult should they be lost. You will be held responsible for them and excuses are not acceptable as you were required to make backups. (paper work may be easily backed up by scanning or photocopy. Store everything in the lab or in some other safe location.
I am currently working to acquire enote (electronic notebook from ORNL DOE project for lab books) that we will use. This is a free software that allows creation of a notebook.
You may submit either electronically, or in paper format. Notebooks must be readable and logical. Each lab should be identified.
50% of your grade is based on labs so take time and care to record your activity.
