CIS 100: Course Information Fall 2008

Description: This is an applied course to be taught in a laboratory. The student in the course will study the components of personal computing systems and basic networking skills necessary to construct and manage home and small business systems. The course focuses in current hardware and provides students with the skills to build their own systems and manage simple networks.

Platforms: AMD 64 Bit Dual Core Processors

Operating Systems: Windows Vista 64, Ubuntu LInux 8.04 64 bit

Meeting Place: GSB 216

Meeting Time: MR -- 1530 - 1650 ; or Monday 1845.

Textbook: Check with Bookstore or Any Hardware/A+ guide.

Prerequisite: None

Grades:

Grades are determined by the following schedule:

Two Exams: 400 points

Laboratory Notebook: 500

Instructor Impression: 100 (hard work, attention to detail, etc.)

Incomplete Grades: The Grade of I is reserved for use when a student is unable to complete the course due to emergency or illness in the last 2 weeks of the course. Grades of I are rarely given and will only be considered in the event of an emergency. I grades are NEVER given for failure to drop, in lieu of an F, etc. You should NEVER assume you will receive an I for any reason.

Extra Credit etc.: You will NEVER be given an opportunity for extra credit after you have received a failing grade. Any extra credit opportunities which may exist will have been announced on the website and in the classroom prior to the end of the semester. You will not be able to change your grade after the final by submitting extra work.

Attendance: You are not required to attend the course but success in the course will be very difficult if you cannot attend the class meetings. You ARE responsible for all changes, assignments, or any other information that is presented in the classroom. This includes exam dates or changes, assignement due dates, and any other requirements. If you are unable to attend a meeting of the class, you should arrange for someone to provide you with this information.

Homework: Assignments in this course will require your physical presence in the lab at times outside of class. The lab is available for your use at other times via the electronic lock. If your job, life, family, etc. will not permit your presence on campus at any other time than Wed. night, you will have great difficulty completing the course.

TurnitIn: Be advised all papers are processed through turnitin.com and any instance of plaigarism will result in an F in the course and referral to the Dean of Students for possible expulsion from the University.
